> The automotive industry
The main activity comes from the trucks, coaches, and buses industry with linked industries such as coach works and trailors. The Rhône-Alpes automotive industry also relies on several partnerships and second and third level sub-contractors (LAMBERET CONSTRUCT. ISOTHERMES, MGI COUTIER, RENAULT TRUCKS, SMI Koyo, SNR ROULEMENTS...).

> Mechanical engineering and equipments
Rhône-Alpes is the leader in France in the mechanical field. It is wellknown for its machineries for the textile industry, the transformation of plastics industry, air handling systems and cooling equipments... ( CATERPILLAR France, CIAT, IMAJE, POMAGALSKI, STAUBLI...).
Rhône-Alpes is also world-wide recognized in the fields of electrical, electronic and information technology equipments. (ASCOM MONETEL, ENTRELEC, HEWLETT PACKARD France, MGE UPS Systems, SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC, SOMFY...).

> Sub-contracting
Rhône-Alpes is the most important region in terms of industrial sub-contracting, as it represents more than 1/4 of the potential in France, specially for screw-cutting equipments. Sub-contracting has become more specialized and currently takes place in the fields of precision machining, the processes of plastics transformation and moulding, powder metallurgy and sheet metal work.
In the Rhône-Alpes region, firms dealing in sub-contracting are mainly small and medium size ones (ALLIMAND, MECACENTRE...).

> The chemical industry
With the presence of several multinationals in the region, there are many large first-rate poles in this field, specifically in basic, fine, and agricultural chemistry (AVENTIS, COATEX, ATOFINA, MSSA, NYLTECH France, RHODIA, SNF...).

> Health and biotechnologies
The Rhône-Alpes region is a European leader in the field of human and animal health. It stands among the world's top producers of biological products and blood derivatives.
With 300 firms and 20% of French potential in biomedical technologies field, the Rhône-Alpes region is the leader in the fields of materials, diagnostics, bio reactivities, dialysis equipments, medical surgery equipments and prosthesis (AVENTIS PASTEUR, BECTON DICKINSON France, BIOMERIEUX , BOIRON, HOSPAL, MERCK-LIPHA, Laboratoires ROCHE NICHOLAS..).

> The textile industry
With its strong tradition in the textile industry, the Rhône-Alpes region is currently specialized in the production of high quality textiles and related products such as the technical textiles. In this branch of activity, the area accounts for 66% of France's production (CHAMATEX, DEVEAUX, HEXCEL FABRICS, MRM, PORCHER, ZANNIER...).

> Consumer goods
In addition to clothing wear, the Rhône-Alpes region is specialized in the production of leather shoes, and a numerous prestigious brand names symbolizing French good taste and luxury. Another strentgh of this region is the symbol of the production of household and personal goods, specially in sports - industries ( BIJOUX GL, CALOR, INFOGRAMES, Charles JOURDAN, Stéphane KELIAN, MEUBLES GRANGE, ROSET, SALOMON, SEB/TEFAL, SKIS ROSSIGNOL...).

> Food and agriculture
Rhône-Alpes is a reference as regards the food and agriculture industries. The region profits from the diversity and quality of its agricultural productions and from its well-known gastronomy. Wines from the Beaujolais area and the Côtes du Rhône label are equally well-known, as well as the area's cheeses, mineral waters, regional specialities and the products cultivated in the land and regional specialities (BRIOCHES PASQUIER, CEDILAC-CANDIA, DISTRIBORG, EAUX MINERALES D'EVIAN, ENTREMONT, TEISSEIRE...).
